This retreat focuses on one of my favorite processes- natural dyeing! We deepen our connection with the land as we learn to experiment with wild color. WATCH THE PROCESS HERE! And the Muse Video here so you can feel what the weekend might be like.
In this retreat we will:
Dye a silk veil (or pillowcase, raw fabric to sew, etc…) with seasonal plants gathered from the farm - tbd depending on what is available! This process takes a full day - harvesting, sorting, boiling, straining, mordanting, dipping, rinsing, washing, hanging. You take your own silk veil home! Gaea will pre-sew a variety of silk veils (& maybe pillowcases) for you to choose from.
Bring your own fabric to dye in the vats once everyone dyes their first project.
Veil & Authentic Movement classes will activate our bodies, movement moves intention through in real space & time. A veil class, dance church, and whenever you want to move.
Spaciousness allows time to joyfully relish human connections to nourish ourselves during the dance of the dye process.
Easy rituals will pepper our days as we ground into deep summer rewilding.
Fire dance in the circle, first burns are welcomed.
The Eta Aquariids meteor shower will be visible that weekend from the farm - at it’s peak!
Meals:
Caryatis home cooks Friday dinner - Sunday brunch! Please indicate any dietary request in the registration form so we have ample time to prepare.
Where You can Stay:
in Tony & Alayne’s home : they have a spare room, a futon, air mattresses, and lots of big comfy couches
camp in the fields in your own personal camping nook! Campers and Vans welcomed, too. BYO tent, sleeping bag, mattress, pillow, lights, etc…

-Arrive afternoon/evening to Caryatis Farms and settle in
-brief overview of the dye process
-sunset silk flow & mini class to pick out your veil
-mordant veils overnight

-grounding ritual + fire dancing
Saturday
-morning meditation ritual plant walk to pick dye plants & flowers
breakfast
-build a fire, prepare dye stuff to immerse in vats & let simmer for an hour.
lunch
-cauldrons bubble, introduce restraint methods, dip & dye silk to your hearts content. Let sit. Wash out and let dry when finished!
-free time, crafts, etc…
-mix indigo vat and let sit overnigh

Small weighted veils (sometimes called "flags") are what I began with- sometimes with a pair.

Movement : This small style veil is also known as a “flag”. It’s a fast moving technical dream, small to avoid the tangles of large veils in small spaces. These tend to be easier for beginners starting their flow journey, and are great to use dual handed for a brain expanding flow. Small veils are tuckable, travel-able, and super fun for a fast-paced flow.

A large 9ft veil with a tail is absolutely magnificent. It’s large enough to wrap yourself fully and fills any large stage quite well. By using small stage techniques + practice, one can use this in small spaces too, never fear. I have used this on 60×40foot stages in Vegas and 6×6 foot stages in Chicago and New York. :)
This veil is your infinite potential - undyed & sewn with high quality silk thread so you could dye it yourself should you desire to. It also catches the light thrown up on it and becomes that color for the moment.

Movement : This large style veil is big enough to wrap most bodies, and flutters sumptuously with the tail diagonal edge in curvaceous shapes that are varied and infinite. Ideal for larger spaces (but can be adapted for smaller with skill) this large shape takes up space! I recommend you move your body a lot when dancing with large veils. [The dyed color spot on this veil creates more spiral movement for the eye, making your swirls catching and fetching.]

Part ribbon, part large veil! If you want a VERY UNIQUE size and shape, this one if for you! The tail comes in about halfway and slims quickly, perfect for body wrapping, character creations, and small spaces. This veil reads large but is less bulky and is SO much fun!

Long thin rectangles with half moons at the ends
The sky is the limit for your dreams! These 2 flags (which were, once, fan veils for a very short period of their lives) these flow like those fans but with the flexible weighting of my Gaea style veils. Using these feels like swirling in the sky, opening up to the majesty of the world around you as you lift your gaze and spirit to the quality of air. Their long thin-ness is great for large movements and big spaces - which might just be your mind itself.
Note: these will be a challenge in their medium size for flags for a newbie - but they can be used individually, with a friend, or one at a time until you put the practice hours in to use them seamlessly!

This undyed half circle is a blank canvas for you to dance with! The rounded shape flutters more than the rectangularish large veil, and suits itself to costume pieces a bit more. ;) This white will take on any color of the light that is thrown upon it, and can be dyed if you choose.

RIBBON WEAVER
a ribbon dancer for adults.... this delphinium blue hearken to water and sky, flower petals and dreams. The ribbon consists of 3 pieces of carefully hemmed silk in unique shapes that spray out to display their tips and tails with movement.
Attached firmly to a telescoping pole with a sturdy handle, the dancer can change the length of the ribbon pole at any time.
Great for festivals, kids, playtime, performances (esp long form), and lots of wind.... it might even be called a glorified cat toy. ;)

Beauty marks define this half moon veil. They were created from the simmering dye pot, giving this veil a unique touch, no other exists in the world like it. Just like you. :)
Buckthorn is an invasive tree in Wisconsin, so we scrape the bark off to reveal a deep orange underlayer. This bark, rich with the tree’s lifeblood, gives this half moon sumptuous veil it’s rich coloration. Naturally dyed, this fleshy warm tone hearkens to wildness and softness of skin itself. A fluttering edge inspires to nature herself, trees and soil, bird feathers and rabbit fur. You are of the cosmos, you are one with everything.

In this masterclass series I guide you in flow & techniques developed over a decade of training, flow explorations, performances, burlesque, and play. I recommend non-static-ey tighter fitting clothing for this, or as little clothing as you’re comfortable wearing!

Welcome to your BIG complexity ! This course is brainy and exciting - definitely make sure you have the basics down from the Levels 1, 2, & 3 instructionals + a lot of practice before diving in here.
In this first class, we'll focus on PLAY & flow to tease our brain bodies into creating new pathways. This is essential for us to integrate the complexity, and to embody it fully within our mind bodies. Laugh a lot, and don’t take yourself seriously! This stuff takes years to master.

In the last class, we get into our bodies with an excellent and long warmup, and explore how to carve exquisitely imagined complicated shapes around our bodies with wrists, arms, twists, and releasing into the flow.

You can measure your progress through this series by listening to how your brain responds to challenges, struggle, and release. As you practice presence, your body begins to respond and react to your new ways of flowing with ease and grace - as you flow into and through the newness of it all.

journey starting in 2009. And, much of this is built upon the movement training I’ve
had since the age of 5 - which is ever evolving and flowing in ways to this day.

for you to dive into. I encourage you to find your own flow, embody the silk veil in
your own unique way, and slip sweetly into flow state to re-sculpt your neural
pathways towards easefully moving from struggle to flow.
The technical aspects of the silk veil are broken down here at the request of my
students over the years- as my silk veils have blossomed from a personal passion
done in my home studio with my fire & flow troupe to an internationally-wide art
form with weighted veil practitioners all over Europe, Australia, Asia, Central
America, South America, and beyond. It’s pretty incredible to imagine how following
my creative spark one evening created such a domino effect.

WEIGHTED VEILS
My specialty “weighted veil” is weighted in one corner. I create both weighted, double weighted, and unweighted veils.
COLORS
I use ancient Japanese Shibori dyeing methods, innovative silk painting, and creative artistic techniques coupled with high quality natural or acid dyes to achieve all colors. View the dye chart here & let me know what color(s) you fancy.
