Creature of the Black Lagoon: musebox

○●○ Creature Captures ○●○

The Creature of the Black Lagoon got a lot of stagetime this year!!

This creature has been underwater in Florida, to the deserts of Vegas, and now the stages of Chicago.

Will you be willing to explore the depths of our souls with me? This act is borne of my direct research taking our sailboat down the inland rivers from chicago, illinois to mobile, alabama. @radicalmoonlove

the things we don;t know that lurk beneath the water are misunderstood, yet does that make them terrifying? Or fascinating? Both?

Do you feel the monster within you?

I am reminded of the poignant lessons monster lore reminds us towards:

-perspectives: what we deem monstrous and horrifying is subjective to our own values and cultural beliefs- which should often be challenged and inspected.

-violence: force and aggression are often (not always) used from places of anger (protecting) and fear (not wanting to lose something). How do you use this? How do you see others use it, and can we put ourselves in their shoes?

Horror, fantasy, SciFi are my favorite genres as they exist to create a world humans can believe in... one that offers ideas different to the current culture.

-beauty: beautiful is in the beholder... many have expressed to me how beautiful the creature is, even with a 'terrifying' nature. I agree. Beauty in that which is unknown, different, humanoid, and mysterious.

-The "other": Human/animal/alien is different than the percieved 'perfection' of humanity... what makes us human? How do archaic ideas of human perfection uphold racist, sexist, classist, ableist, etc... tropes that should be reformulated?

-Glamour: often "High femme beauty" yet a glamor is something that catches the eye, a glimmer, and hides or covers something else. Think about it. ;)

-Wildness: the wild is often opposite of elevated glamour... and we hold culturally denigrating ideas about unkempt, dirty, intuitive, emotionally vast, unlogical beings. What does this say about how we treat the earth and her creatures within? How else are elevating humans above our earth connecting and divorcing wild?

What do you think monster lore shares with us? What can we learn from a movie 75 years in the past, for today?
